My bucket list cookies

I haven’t yet gotten on the life list/bucket list train, but if I ever do, I know one of the first things on the list would be “perfect Gram’s chocolate chip cookies.” I was not raised on those meager little Tollhouse discs, no sir – only my Gram’s plate-sized chewy, caramel-y, earthy masterpiece cookies. The perfect Valentine’s gift

As much as it pains me to say it because it makes my own gift-giving experiences that much more difficult, I do think there is such a thing as the “perfect gift.” It varies occasion to occasion and with the particular giver and receiver, but, every once in a while, a gift strikes the perfect balance three scales: (1) frivolity, (2) appropriate unexpectedness, and (3) the “treat factor.”

Damn you, Molly Wizenberg. Damn you! (In a good way.)

I received Molly Wizenberg’s lovely “A Homemade Life” for Christmas (two copies, in fact), and immediately sank in for two straight days of reading in Portland, which happens to be one of my most favorite activities. The book is taken mainly from her blog, Orangette, which you’ll notice I’ve mentioned more than a few times lately. Each chapter is a story from her life, followed by a related recipe, starting at childhood and ending with her wedding cake. Read more
