Lime cornmeal cookies (emotional distraction)

This quickly approaching life transition (11 days. 11 days!) means a lot of goodbyes. Goodbyes to favorite restaurants, goodbyes to old routines, goodbyes to most of our belongings (either stored or sold or donated), goodbye to Pomona, and – most significantly – goodbyes to all of our friends, colleagues, and mentors in the area. Most of the time it hasn’t really sunk in that anything big is happening, but every once in a while I catch myself realizing that it’ll be the last time I’m seeing someone or going somewhere, or that I won’t have another chance to do something before I go.

I spent this last weekend gathered in Palm Springs with six of my closest college girlfriends, which coincidentally ended up being the last time we’ll all be together before two of us move away this summer. We lounged by the pool, we sipped cocktails, we laughed, and we had the sort of serious conversations that come from our shared liberal arts college background – as we generally do when we’re together. We managed to spend all three lovely days together without any sort of big teary goodbye, and I’m glad we spent the time laughing and acting like it was just another weekend, instead of something more intense. It was all left on a positive note, and I’m trying to focus on that memory as Brett and I speed through the next 10 days full of goodbye dinners and happy hours and brunches.

These might help.

Spiced donut muffins (and a wish list)

I want someone to wash all my dishes for me.

I want to live in a house with actual insulation and windows that close all the way.

I want my favorite shoes to never wear out, and I want an endless supply of Patagonia yoga pants.

I want to stop accidentally burning myself on the inside of my oven. (Do not ask me why this keeps happening.)

I want to be able to run more than twice a week without my knees staging a coup.

I want to eat a donut for lunch, then maybe a donut for a snack. Then a donut for breakfast the next morning.

I can’t do much about most of those, but that last one I can work with.  Read more

Strawberry cake, a fixation

I can get a little fixated on things sometimes. I’ll be the first to admit it. But together with a growing sense that it’s “no big deal” to churn out another batch of cookies or another shaker of cocktail or, in this case, another layer cake, that tendency to fixate means that sometimes I’m making a sizable volume of something in order to make sure I know how I like it best.

Taqueria night 2 of 2: Chipotle-tomato pork tacos with queso fresco and homemade crema, fried plantains with homemade cajeta

Two nights of authentic taqueria dinners. Why not? This post details night 2 of 2.

Night two, quite different than the first, even with many of the same elements.

Mexican_dinner_4

Start out with some sweet, tangy Mexican sangria. Bring out more of those homemade tortillas, heirloom beans, and tomatillo salsa.  Then some slow-braised pork tinga, packed with chipotles and tomatoes and onions. Maybe some creamy, tangy queso fresco and homemade crema for topping your tacos. Later, whip up some quick fried plantains with homemade cajeta caramel and more of that homemade crema. Read more

Red rice, green rice (here we go!)

Um, scratch that.

I just wrote a big, long, involved post about chocolate cake. But then I realized that it’s December 12, which leaves me exactly exactly 19 days to finish that list over there to the right. Let me just say that in the last three weeks I have been home to cook dinner exactly four times. Four times. Not an excuse, but just to say that things have been a bit frantic around here lately.  My last day at Pomona is Friday. Brett’s last day of graduate school is Friday. I started teaching solo (meaning I finished training) last week. Christmas and all of its travel-causing, gift-giving, craft-heavy glory is in less than two weeks. Let’s ponder that.

And then let’s get a move on.

After this, you’re up to date. Chocolate cake, two rices, two new books, three new cocktails. What’s left needs to happen in the next 19 days. Okay. Okay.
